Passiflora Table lamp
Since the special shape of the flower is reminiscent of the Passion of Christ (stamens for the wounds of Christ, three scars as crucifixion nails and the halo as a crown of thorns) the name of the passion flower goes back to this symbol. The Passiflora lamp is based on a coloured cardboard prototype that was made in 1966 by the two founding members of the Superstudio for the exhibition “Superarchitettura”, the manifesto of Radical Design. This cardboard packaging has been replaced by a translucent material and transforms Passiflora into a light column stretching towards the sun – a column whose deformed profile fluctuates between natural and artificial. The play of allusions and ambiguities corresponds to the design language of Superstudio and is evident in almost all of their designs.

Because the table and floor lamp Passiflora, due to its special shape like that of a passion flower, does not belong to the known and common types of lighting fixtures. And the use of an industrial material such as methacrylate is also more avant-garde for lights. It is precisely this unconventional combination that distinguishes Passiflora and Superstudio around the architects Peter Frassinelli, Alessandro and Roberto Magris, Adolfo Natalini, Alessandro Poli and Christiano Torald di Francia and makes the light object an artifact in design history. As such, Passiflora is exhibited in design museums around the world.
At a height of 29 centimeters and a width of 30 centimeters, Passiflora measures a depth of 41 centimeters. An LED bulb with a maximum of 10 watts lights up Passiflora. As an object on a marble plinth, a side table, placed directly on a concrete floor, in the hallway, living room, dressing room or as atmospheric light in the entrance hall – Passiflora can be playfully set in scene and can change the emotional perception of a room.
The Passiflora lamp is a unique design object that perfectly combines form and function.
